Great news! The Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribal Council accepted a petition filed by tribal members today and agreed to withdraw from a Project Engagement Agreement the previous tribal council had signed with Lithium Nevada for the proposed Thacker Pass open pit lithium mine.
The petition cited harm to land, air, and water as well as the likelihood that the proposed mine would bring man camps which tend to be associated with racism, hard drugs, sexual abuse, and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW).
The tribal council’s resolution today undermines Lithium Nevada’s claims that they have engaged in adequate consultation with the Fort McDermitt tribe.
That is great news! The People United will never be defeat. Solidarity.
That is such great news! Was so inspired by my 2 day stay at camp by the generous and deeply ethical people fighting for the land and it’s inhabitants. Was sorry to have to leave without saying goodbye in order to get to Winnemucca by 7am.
